The treatment of Gastroenteritis

Studies are being carried out to determine whether the organisms which cause gastroenteritis are sensitive to the hydrogen peroxide and UMF® antibacterial properties. Many reports have indicated that honey is an effective remedy for stomach upsets.

One report in a British Medical Journal suggested that honey shortened the duration of diarrhoea and was as effective as glucose at promoting re-absorption of sodium and water from the intestines. As the major problem with gastroenteritis is that the patient becomes dehydrated, dosing with honey could help to replace lost electrolytes and provide an energy source as well. This would provide rehydration and the earlier clearing of diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach upsets.

When used to treat diarrhoea, honey promotes the rehydration of the body and causes the earlier clearing of diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach upsets.

Laboratory studies are showing that in vitro all the diarrhoea-causing bacteria which were tested are very sensitive to the antibacterial action of honey.
