What is UMF? |
| UMF stands for "Unique Manuka Factor", and is the
trademark for the special antibacterial property found in Manuka Honey. When honey is diluted,
a special enzyme the bees have added produces hydrogen peroxide, a well known antibiotic.
Manuka Honey has been found to have an antibacterial activity in addition to
hydrogen peroxide. No one has so far discovered the substance involved, so it is called UMF. |

 |
 |
What does the UMF Number Mean? |
| The UMF number (e.g. UMF16) is a standard way of describing the bacteria-killing power
of the product. The honey is put in a plate with a bacterial culture, and the area is measured
where the bacterial growth is stopped. this area is compared to a similar area produced by
a solution of phenol and water. the number refers to the percentage of phenol in the water.
So UMF 10 is honey that has the same bacteria-killing power as 10% phenol. |

What is so special about UMF Manuka Honey - also called Active Manuka Honey? |
| UMF Manuka Honey has very powerful antibacterial activity. It can kill Staph aureus bacteria
even when it is diluted to only 1.8% honey concentration in water. It has also been shown
to kill antibiotic-resistant Staph aureus (the Golden Staph "Super Bug" at 10% honey
concentration. |

Can Honey be used on Burns and Wounds? |
| Honey is one of the best treatments available for burns and wounds because it provides
a moist, sterile environment for tissue re-growth. It also makes a soft barrier between the
wound and the dressing that protects new tissue from being torn away when the dressing
is changed. UMF Manuka Honey has been shown to kill the 7 most common bacteria found
in wounds. It is especially useful in helping heal persistent wound such as leg ulcers, bed
sores and 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree burns, that don't respond to conventional treatment. |
| |
 |
 |
 |
How should honey be applied to a wound? |
| Because honey is sticky and the wound will cause the honey to run, it is best to apply a
teaspoon or tablespoon (depending on the size and depth of the wound) to a sterile gauze,
then apply the gauze with the honey to the wound. Change the dressing every 12 hours. |
| |
 |
 |
 |
What does honey feel like on a wound? |
| Most of the time the honey feels very soothing when covering a wound. However sometimes
you may feel a slight stinging sensation which is caused by the high acidity of the honey.
For most people the slight stinging will go away after a couple of minutes. In rare cases,
the stinging can continue for sometime. If that happens, the honey should be washed off
in water and a conventional treatment applied instead. |

How is UMF Manuka Honey taken for an up-set stomach, acid reflux
(heart burns), stomach ulcer or other internal upsets such as duodenal ulcers? |
| UMF Manuka Honey is especially useful for stomach complaints, because a 5%
concentration of this honey has shown to kill Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria that causes
most stomach ulcers. UMF Manuka Honey also kills a range of bacteria associated with
gastroenteritis and diarrhea. Take one teaspoon of UMF Manuka Honey and put it on a
square inch size bread and take it 20 min. before meals to coat out the stomach. Do not
drink anything right after manuka honey intake, in order to keep the honey as concentrated
as possible. |

What is the difference between Manka Honey and UMF16+ Active Manuka Honey? |
Manuka Honey is collected from the flower of the manuka bush (leptospermum scoparium) in New Zealand, and is
sold in the US at by Natrolife International.. Manuka Honey is less concentrated than UMF16+ Manuka Honey. Active
Manuka Honey is used for sore throats, colds, canker sores, fever blisters, minor cuts, wounds, acne,
scratches. Manuka Honey also tastes great on toast with peanut butter!
UMF16+ Manuka Honey,, also known as Active Manuka Honey, is also collected from the
manuka bush (leptospermum scoparium) in an area where manuka bushes are highly
concentrated, and therefore a more concentrated honey is collected. Dr. Molan from the
Waikato University of New Zealand has been researching manuka honey for the past two
decades and has classified various strengths of manuka honey.
UMF stands for 'unique manuka factor' - the factor responsible for destroying staphaureus,
streptococcus and h. pylori (helicobacter pylori), the bacteria believed to be the cause of
stomach ulcers. Therefore the statement has been made that UMF16+ Manuka Honey may
be the solution for stomach ulcers sufferers worldwide.
Please Note that UMF16+ is a Trademark Name. Each batch of honey is tested and certified
by one of Dr. Molan's approved laboratories, in order to certify that honey labeled UM16+ has
a UMF Factor above 16. In separate documentation - such as our extensive website
www.manukausa.com and flyers, we document how high this year's batch certified. On the
label you will find the Trademark Name UMF16+.

Are there any foods I should avoid when taking UMF16+ Manuka Honey for my stomach ulcer? |
| YES! I'm glad you asked. To some people it might be obvious, others simply haven't given it
any thought. When taking UMF16+ Manuka Honey for an up-set stomach for example after
food poisoning, vomiting, stomach ulcer or other intestinal problems, it is important NOT to
further irritate the intestinal tract. Stay away from hot, spicy foods, herbs, spices, mustards,
marinades (some BBQ sauces) and other obviously irritating foods. To soothe and support
the healing process of the intestinal tract, start the day with cooked oatmeal and eat it with
UMF16+ Manuka Honey as a topping. Cooked oatmeal is soothing to the intestinal tract.
Again, ask your doctor or nutritionist about what foods are most soothing to coat the intestinal
tract, and which foods to avoid all together. |
